Recent efforts by state leaders to fill the large number of judicial vacancies in the state court system have started to pay off. Civil and matrimonial cases will resume in Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem counties after having been paused since February due to a lack of judges.

There are still 53 judicial vacancies in the state courts, and court business is still suffering because of those vacancies. Civil and matrimonial cases remain on hold in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties, and a similar pause will take effect in Passaic County beginning July 31.

The court system has been operating with an average of more than 60 vacancies for the past three years.
