The state Senate confirmed eight new Superior Court nominees on Tuesday. Many vacancies remain, however, and more are expected as retirement looms for some judges. The State Bar Association and others have been calling on the Legislature to respond to the shortage for quite some time.

In an interview with NJ Spotlight News Thursday, Senate President Nick Scutari (D-Union) said he may call the Legislature into session in July to confirm additional judges to help alleviate the shortage. Efforts are ongoing to fill the vacancies, he said. “We’re working diligently to fill those with the governor’s office.”

“Our process is cumbersome. It is onerous. It can be long. But it’s the best process I’ve seen so far,” Scutari said.
