A group of New Jersey residents are speaking out against the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s $10.7 billion plan to relieve congestion by expanding the turnpike to and from the Holland tunnel. They say the area is already dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, and it would lead to more congestion. Critics want the state to use the money to invest in other forms of transportation they say are safer and better for the environment.
The proposed plan is drawing heightened attention since the Turnpike Authority recently more than doubled the project’s cost from the $4.7 billion estimate given in 2017. The agency cites inflation and rising interest rates for the steep jump.
