Flag will fly at half-staff in New Jersey to honor the life and legacy of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who died Tuesday at the age of 71. Oliver was the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the state Assembly and the first in New Jersey history to be elected to statewide office.

Gov. Phil Murphy, who was on a family vacation in Italy when he got the news, cut his trip short and returned home to New Jersey on Thursday. Murphy has 45 days to name a new lieutenant governor, a requirement of the state Constitution. Funeral arrangements have not been made public.
