President Biden has been using the final days before the midterm elections to warn the American public that democracy is on the ballot on Tuesday and under attack by those who continue to perpetuate the “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen.
Voter intimidation continues to be a talking point across the country and in New Jersey, where the Legislature recently passed a bill requiring police officers to work in plain clothes at polling locations, saying the presence of uniformed officers has been a barrier to people of color showing up to the polls.
“I just wanted to state right up front that we don’t have any specific or credible threats to New Jersey as well as against our New Jersey’s election infrastructure. We’re confident that we have all the controls and processes in place to ensure that we have another safe and secure election cycle,” said Laurie Doran, director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness.
“As many people might know, our office … works very closely and collaborates with the New Jersey Department of State, which is the one responsible for doing the elections here in New Jersey, as well as the twenty-one counties and … our federal, state and local partners to make sure that everything — all the systems and the registrations — are as safe as possible,” Doran said.
