As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues, almost 90 members of the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday to perform two free concerts at Lincoln Center in New York City on Thursday and Friday. Tour manager Aleksandra Kula said it took about four months to gather up the musicians, many of whom were forced to flee Ukraine and relocated in various parts of Europe.
“Our soldiers are defending our country on the front lines and we are here defending our country by playing Ukrainian music,” said Einna Borrobets, who plays the flute.
“In a way we are fighting, but on the cultural front, showing the Ukrainian spirit, Ukrainian culture and artistry. It’s been very special, very emotional,” pianist Anna Fedoroda.
