Younger NJ residents detail impact of pandemic on mental health

Local efforts spring up to help those in need

Throughout this pandemic, few institutions have been more visibly altered than our schools as they grapple with COVID-19 outbreaks, ever-changing mandates, shifts to online learning, politics over masks and more. Not only have learning and safety been in jeopardy, but the mental health of students and teachers has become a critical issue.

As part of our Living with COVID series to mark the second anniversary of the arrival of COVID-19 in New Jersey, we talk with students to learn how they are coping. Already at a time of flux in their lives, many are now dealing with mental and emotional health challenges. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy this week called the pandemic’s impact on young people “devastating.”
