The U.S. Surgeon General has called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms, citing platforms’ effects on young people’s lives. The warnings would be similar to those now mandatory on cigarette boxes.
NJ Spotlight News spoke with Dr. Jennifer Chuang, chief of Adolescent Medicine at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, about the recommendation and whether the labels would be feasible — or effective in improving children and teen’s mental health.
The announcement comes after Surgeon General Vivek Murthy voiced major concerns in an opinion piece in the New York Times that social media is associated with a growing mental health crisis among teenagers.
