U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th), the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee — which deals with tech policy — has called on Congress to pass legislation that would create more privacy safeguards and protections for users’ online data.
Pallone hosted a roundtable discussion Monday in New Brunswick on ways to protect American’s privacy online.
“What we find is not just problems with privacy on social media but also trying to gather your private information, whether it’s Social Security number, and then selling it for profits,” Pallone said at the roundtable.
Pallone supports a law signed by President Joe Biden last month that orders the parent company of TikTok to either sell the popular social media app, or have it banned in the United States. The president and the law’s sponsors in Congress said TikTok poses a national security threat because the Chinese government holds a stake in Bytedance, the app’s parent company.
TikTok on Tuesday announced a lawsuit against the federal government, arguing the law violates the company’s First Amendment rights.
