A heated board of education meeting in Colts Neck Wednesday night was attended by impassioned parents and community members. Under debate was a policy that would cause teachers to “out” LGBTQ+ students from pre-K to fifth grade.

Izzy Woodward, a Farmingdale resident, said, “I think that in the best interests of children, you should reconsider and vote no. Don’t force these children to tell their parents anything if they’re not comfortable.”

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s office is in legal disputes with a handful of school districts over similar proposals. And the Colts Neck board postponed a decision on the policy until the attorney general’s disputes with those schools districts have been resolved.

Michael Gottesman, founder of the New Jersey Public Education Coalition, said, “That could take years, so unless they vote again and say they’re going to undo that, they’re stuck until the issue, the legal issue, is resolved in the administrative courts, or the courts of the state of New Jersey.”
