
When it comes to teaching their students how to read, teachers in New Jersey’s elementary schools employ a variety of strategies, with no consensus on the best approach. Some favor phonics, some opt for “whole language” instruction, some a combination. But whatever the choice, the stakes are real as the state and its students struggle to recover from the pandemic.
