“My wife just called me this morning, crying because she doesn’t know what’s going to happen. Are we gonna lose our home? We have nowhere else to go,” one Jersey City man told us.
Tenants who owe back rent and face eviction because of the pandemic can apply for eviction protection and rental assistance but they must do so by Wednesday, Dec. 15. That’s the deadline New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs set for tenants to file an online application and self-certify their eligibility.
Thousands could be shielded from eviction. The problem is that many tenants don’t know about the program or falsely believe they’re automatically protected. Advocates are going door-to-door trying to sign people up and beat the clock. To get help at DCA, go online at njdca.onlinepha.com or call (609) 490-4550.
