Atlantic City on Friday launched a total rehab of its oldest affordable housing complex with plans to make the 126 homes and community center at Buzby Village more flood-resilient. The complex sits along a flood-prone strip of the city’s back bay that only needs a high tide or hard rainstorm for the streets to overflow.
Like most affordable housing along the Jersey coast, Buzby Village is in an area threatened by rising sea levels. One study shows New Jersey leads the country in affordable units at risk due to climate change. The rehabilitation project in Atlantic City is one example of how towns can — at least temporarily — preserve much-needed, but vulnerable, affordable housing.
