Students sue Rutgers over COVID-19 vaccine mandate

U.S. Supreme Court blocked a similar challenge to Indiana University's mandate

Rutgers University is being sued by a nonprofit activist group and 18 students over the school’s requirement for students to be fully vaccinated before returning to campus in the fall. The lawsuit argues the mandate violates students’ 14th Amendment rights, depriving them of their right to refuse unwanted medical treatment.

The lawsuit also accuses Rutgers of coercing students to get an “experimental COVID-19 vaccine” and making the decision only after it was too late for them to accept admission to or transfer to other colleges. A Rutgers spokesperson said the school’s position is supported by the law. The U.S. Supreme Court last week blocked a challenge to Indiana University’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students and employees.
