Among the recent reforms aimed at boosting police accountability in New Jersey was a law that placed the state attorney general’s office in charge of investigating all incidents in which a person died during an interaction with law enforcement.

The law was aimed at removing potential conflicts of interest that county prosecutors may have, but it has had an unintended consequence. The investigations now take much longer.
