A reminder to parents who are now bringing home legal weed that if you purchase edibles — candies, pastries, even THC-infused drinks — keep them locked up and away from kids. For the fourth year in a row, the New Jersey Poison Control Center is reporting a spike in calls after children accidentally consumed cannabis edibles. In 2021, the center assisted in the medical treatment of more than 150 children who were accidentally exposed. Some 100 kids were 5 years old and younger. More than 55 children were between the ages of 6 and 12.
The spike in calls to authorities is not linked to recent sales from New Jersey’s recreational cannabis market, but it comes as kids’ exposure is expected to rise.
Dr. Diane Calello, executive medical director at the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System, joins NJ Spotlight News to explain.
