Legal marijuana for recreational use has been on the market for just over a week in New Jersey, and the sales keep on growing. Some 12,000 people bought on opening day, spending $2 million. We visited two dispensaries, Zen Leaf in Elizabeth and Ascend in Rochelle Park, to see how they’re faring.

In Rochelle Park, Ascend used to average 100 customers a day when it was selling medical marijuana only. Now it’s averaging up to 2,000 customers a day. In Elizabeth, Zen Leaf general manager Sonny Achrekar, said, “This is a time that people have waited decades for. People are just excited to get quality cannabis where they know where the vendor’s coming from, they know where the cannabis is coming from, how it’s grown.”

Chris Goldstein of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws believes sales could have been much higher if more companies could get in the game.
