Self-serve at the gas pump is off the menu again

Senate President opposes pump-your-own gas bill

It looks like drivers will be staying put at the pump. Senate President Nick Scutari said he would not support a bill to allow drivers to pump their own gas, because New Jerseyans overwhelmingly want someone else to do their dirty work. A recent Rutgers-Eagleton poll found 73% support keeping it the way it is.

Supporters of the bill say it could save drivers money, but Scutari says there’s no proof of any major savings. Without his support, the bill doesn’t stand much of a chance, but he has said he’d reconsider if drivers signaled more willingness for a change.
