A new study that analyzed the rollout of remote learning in New Jersey during the pandemic found that students in lower-income districts experienced inequalities in online teaching and learning compared with students in middle-income and wealthier districts.
Rebecca Reynolds, an associate professor in the Rutgers School of Communication and Information and the lead author of the study, discusses how the shift to remote instruction created a digital divide.
“We thought it was really important to get teacher’s perspectives on this because a lot of the research coming out is focusing on student data,” said Reynolds. “And teachers have their own position and perspectives as the orchestrators of pandemic instruction and who played such an integral role in the rollout of emergency remote teaching.”
