New details in Sen. Bob Menendez’s corruption case emerged in court filings by federal prosecutors earlier this week. Prosecutors allege Menendez didn’t just get cash, gold bars and a luxury car, but also a diamond engagement ring for his future wife in exchange for his political influence.
The couple also allegedly conspired to bilk New Jersey towns during the pandemic in a scheme involving a COVID-19 testing lab that was paying Nadine Menendez, the senator’s wife, who used a phone the couple dubbed “007” in an apparent reference to the James Bond character, according to the court filings. Prosecutors say all of this is evidence that Menendez was aware of a “corrupt quid pro quo.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Menendez’s defense team is requesting for his indictment to be dismissed, even invoking Taylor Swift in their argument.
Chris Gramiccioni, a former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, joins NJ Spotlight News to discuss the latest filings.
