Federal prosecutors are strongly opposed to delaying the start of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) corruption trial, according to a letter sent to the judge overseeing the proceeding on Tuesday.
The trial is set to begin on May 6, but defense attorneys had requested that date be delayed at least two months, arguing they need more time to sift through millions of pages of documents turned over by the U.S. Department of Justice. Prosecutors are now pushing back against that request, urging District Court Judge Sidney Stein to stick with the current schedule in order to protect the public’s interest in a speedy trial.
Menendez has pleaded not guilty to charges of a sweeping bribery conspiracy and of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for the Egyptian government.
