The third week of the federal corruption trial against U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) came to a close on Friday. Prosecutors called a new witness, a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Government lawyers allege Menendez pressured the official not to interfere in the lucrative monopoly for halal meat granted to his associate and co-defendant Wael Hana by Egypt.

It marked one of the first times the prosecution presented a direct communication from Menendez that did not first go through his wife, Nadine.
