Gov. Phil Murphy is finally making good on a long-standing promise. He is launching an independent review of the state’s COVID-19 response. It will be conducted by a Philadelphia-based law firm, Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads and led by a Republican former assistant state attorney general. A report is to be issued in late 2023, according to the governor’s office.

The review will include New Jersey’s state of readiness in early 2020 and how the government handled the challenges that subsequently emerged. The Murphy administration has been criticized for the slow rollout of this review. More than 35,000 New Jersey lives have been lost to the pandemic.
