In Jersey City this year, Mayor Steve Fulop appears to be a lock for reelection. He has a seven-figure war chest and an opponent with little name recognition. Even the city council races are mostly predictable. But in Ward B, on the city’s west side, progressives are looking to do something that hasn’t been done here in probably, ever — elect a socialist to a seat in government.
City council candidate Joel Brooks says, “I want to emphasize that I’m a Democratic socialist. I’m running for office to represent the west side of Jersey City, to improve working people’s lives.” Brooks is a staff representative for HPAE, the health care workers union.
