Election Day has arrived and voters are choosing the Democratic and Republican legislative nominees for November’s general election.

State Senate races top the primary election ballot, including a battle between former Republican running mates in the 3rd District, Sen. Ed Durr and Assemblywoman Beth Sawyer. There are only nine contested Senate races out of 40 districts statewide. The Assembly has contested races in 10 districts.

How will the outcome of the primary election affect the general elections in November? “I think it’s going be a little bit sleepier on the Democratic side than the Republican side,” said Democratic strategist Dan Bryan. “On the Republican side, they’ve got to prove that they can put forward candidates that appeal to the mainstream.”

Republican strategist Chris Russell, said, “We have to put candidates who can compete. Governor Murphy, six years in — people get tired. They’re looking for an alternative … Even Democrats are looking to possibly move past Joe Biden. So there’s an opportunity in the political environment for Republicans.”
