Tuesday is Election Day in New Jersey, with voters choosing the Democratic and Republican nominees for the state Senate and Assembly, as well as nominees for county and municipal elections in November.
Polls are open statewide from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can find their local polling location on their sample ballot or by visiting the state Division of Elections website.
Turnout for primary elections with the Legislature topping the ticket tends to be low, with fewer than 15% of registered Democrats and Republicans voting. As of Monday morning, 220,000 New Jerseyans had already cast mail-in ballots and another 24,000 voted early in-person between Friday and Sunday. More than 6.5 million New Jerseyans are registered to vote. About 2.4 million of those are not affiliated with either major party. The unaffiliated can vote in the primary by declaring as Democrat or Republican at the polls, though very few do.
Anyone with a mail-in ballot can still submit it, but it needs to be postmarked by Tuesday, June 6, or placed in a drop box in the voter’s home county by 8 p.m.
There are contested races in about a third of the legislative districts around the state. There are battles for nine state Senate nominations, including South Jersey’s 3rd District seat held by Republican Ed Durr. The Democratic contest in the 27th, based in Essex County, pits Sen. Richard Codey, a former governor, against Sen. Nia Gill. Eleven districts have contested Assembly races.
Judges around the state will be on call to handle questions about an individual’s eligibility to vote. New Jersey has a hotline to handle voters’ questions: 1-877-NJ-VOTER.
Anyone who believes they have been discriminated against or harassed when attempting to vote can contact the state Division on Civil Rights through its website or by calling 1-800-277-BIAS.
