In Newark, a shooting in a home Wednesday night ended with three people killed, including an 8-year-old boy and the shooter, according to authorities.

A man entered the home and shot the boy in the chest. Two other men were also shot, one pronounced dead at the scene, another whose wounds were not fatal. The boy was rushed to University Hospital but died very shortly after.

According to the state attorney general’s office, several officers pursued the assailant on foot after he fled the scene. Two officers fired their weapons, killing him. The attorney general’s office, by law, must now investigate the police-involved shooting and present it to a grand jury.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka held a news conference from the scene to offer more details. He said weapons tied to other crimes around the city were found, along with drugs. The boy who was killed, played baseball in the Jackie Robinson Little League. He is survived by his mother and aunt, who were both present during the shooting.
