Voters in a handful of towns and cities across New Jersey will go to the polls Tuesday in elections to select mayors and council members.

In Paterson, the race for mayor is contentious. Candidates are challenging Mayor Andre Sayegh on his record, with rates of violent crime in the city spiking in recent years. Two of the challengers face charges of voter fraud in a city that’s no stranger to political corruption. Sayegh won election four years ago on his third try. For a new mayor, he worked quickly to solidify his ties to the greater Democratic organization. He has received endorsements from party bigs like Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9th), Sens. Cory Booker and Bob Menendez, and Gov. Phil Murphy.
