Teacher Monica DeStasio caught COVID-19 around Christmas 2021, and her breathing problems got worse as the illness progressed. But when her struggles continued for months after the infection, she learned she was experiencing “long COVID-19.”

DeStasio is part of a growing group of people who are experiencing a multitude of symptoms that can last for weeks, months, even years after their initial COVID-19 illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in five adults over the age of 18 have a health condition that might be related to their previous COVID-19 infection.
