A major snowstorm pounded New Jersey and the region, starting late Monday night and continuing through early afternoon Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall in New Jersey was reported in the northwestern part of the state, with 15 inches recorded in Sussex Borough.
Further south in the state, snow totals were less, but there were accumulations in parts of Central and South Jersey.
Thousands of New Jersey residents experienced power outages due to the storm. The snow also caused major disruptions around the state, as school districts announced closures and delayed openings, and state offices were ordered closed.
Travelers trying to leave via Newark airport Tuesday morning faced canceled flights.
New Jersey State Climatologist David Robinson said, “It seems more of our snow is coming in larger events and not lasting on the ground once it’s here. We are still getting the storms and cold enough to snow but you’re in and out of it quicker; I call them stealth snowstorms. They fall and a couple of days later temperatures are back above normal.”
