No pride flags and signs allowed outside Westwood schools

Superintendent says decision wasn’t an indication of any opinion on the LGBTQ+ flag

Westwood Regional School district is the latest to implement controversial measures, by not allowing LGBTQ+ flags and signs to be shown on school premises. In an email sent by the district’s superintendent Jill Mortimer, she said she has “no objection to the Pride flag” and that this is not “banning” the flag. She noted in the letter that she believes the American and New Jersey flag should only be flown outside school buildings.

This new policy comes in the wake of New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin filing a civil rights complaint this week against new school policies implemented by three boards of education in Monmouth County. The Manalapan-Englishtown, Marlboro and Middletown school boards will require school staff to notify parents if their children ask to officially go by a different name or gender pronoun or use a different bathroom in school.
