The Taliban have been in control of Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul, for 48 hours. U.S. military officials say the airport in Kabul has been secured and flights have resumed.
Late Monday, President Biden announced $500 million to help with refugee settlements and migration needs. Organizations across New Jersey are preparing for an influx of Afghan refugees.
The grassroots community organization Welcome Home Jersey City has been working around-the-clock to get an apartment ready for Afghans fleeing the country amid the Taliban takeover. Volunteers says they don’t know how many refugees to expect or when to expect them, but are ready for the call from the International Rescue Committee, which helps to coordinate resettlements.
The White House says some 2,000 special immigrant visas applicants and their families have already arrived in the United States. But nearly 20,000 more eligible Afghans who risked their lives to help U.S. troops have applied but are still without visas for themselves or their families.
