Editor’s Note: An earlier version of the video report above mischaracterized the Investigative Project on Terrorism. The group describes itself as a “data center on radical Islamist terrorist groups.” The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, has called the group’s founder Steven Emerson an “anti-Muslim activist.”

Muslim community advocates are calling on the Department of Justice to investigate claims of hate against a New Jersey Imam. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, also known as CAIR, is accusing The Investigative Project on Terrorism of paying informants to conduct surveillance on prominent Muslims around the country, like Mohammad Qatanani of the Islamic Center of Passaic County. Islamic advocates say they’re calling on the Department of Justice to investigate if the IPT’s actions violate federal law. IPT denies the claims.
