President Joe Biden on Monday announced a historic $16 billion investment in passenger rail infrastructure, the largest such investment since Amtrak was created in 1971.
Roughly a quarter of that spending — $4.47 billion — is dedicated to key parts of the Gateway Program, which centers on improvements along the Northeast Corridor. That includes the $3.8 billion in federal funding for the new Hudson River tunnel that was announced on Friday, as well as:
- $300 million for the replacement of the Dock Bridge across the Passaic River between Newark and Harrison;
- $180 million for the Delco Lead train yard project in New Brunswick;
- $133 million for the replacement of the Sawtooth Bridges that run through the Meadowlands in Kearny;
- $60 million for upgrades to the interior of Newark Penn Station to address accessibility and passenger circulation issues.
