New Jersey lawmakers and Schools Development Authority officials this week focused in on the physical condition of the schools in some of the state’s largest and poorest districts, with a new report finding significant overcrowding and aging facilities.
NJ Spotlight News’ education writer Hannah Gross wrote about the latest report and the prospects for some of these districts in the upcoming state budget.
“The Murphy administration is proposing [for school construction] $350 million from an off-budget source,” said Gross. “There’s already about $2 billion that the SDA is using to complete some emergency projects. But on top of everything that’s already funded, the SDA estimates they need about $6 or $7 billion to address overcrowding and aging facilities.”
The new report found two-thirds of the state’s highest-need districts are over capacity.
