A pair of senior corrections officers have been arrested and charged with multiple counts each of sexual assault and official misconduct, state Attorney General Matt Platkin announced on Tuesday.
The officers, 53-year-old Gary Nieves of Burlington City and 35-year-old William Young of Marlton, are facing criminal charges for alleged repeated sexual assault and illegal sexual contact with an 18-year-old female inmate who was under their supervision at the Female Secure Care and Intake Facility in Bordentown.
“Nothing I can say today can change what’s alleged to have happened to this young woman,” Platkin said. “We cannot undo what this young woman has endured, or what she will continue to experience as a result of what is alleged to have happened. But what we can do, and what we will do, is prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law and work tirelessly to prevent future harms from occurring in our state facilities.”
According to the complaint, the alleged incidents occurred in shared spaces within the facility and in the victim’s living quarters.
Nieves is charged with four counts of sexual assault in the second degree, one count of official misconduct in the second degree, one count of witness tampering in the third degree, and one count of criminal sexual contact in the fourth degree.
Williams is charged with one count of sexual assault in the second degree, one count of official misconduct in the second degree, and one count of criminal sexual contact in the fourth degree.
If convicted, Nieves and Williams face 10 years in state prison for each sexual assault and official misconduct charge
