This weekend the nation marked the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the aftermath of which continues to reverberate through our daily lives and haunt those who survived. Across New Jersey the ceremonies were poignant and solemn, from service projects to candlelight vigils.
At Cedar Grove High School, the fire department and district students carried on their 8th year of the 9/11 memorial flag installation with 2,977 flags on the front lawn, one for each of the lives lost at the World Trade Center. The tradition is now carried on by a class of students who weren’t yet born at the time of the terror attacks but are learning the significance of that day in our history.
In Essex County, residents turned out for the annual wreath laying at the Eagle Rock Memorial. A string quartet played at the memorial site that displays a more than 7,000-pound steel and concrete artifact from the World Trade Center. One of the many elements that pays tribute to all those whose lives were taken.
