Assemblyman Sean Kean (R-Monmouth) is sponsoring a bill that would require school districts to make water safety a part of the curriculum for kids in grades K-12.
“Last year we had about 28 drownings in the state, which is actually low for New Jersey. We want to make that zero,” said Kean.
“Drowning is an epidemic in our country. The statistics are there. And we found the cure … If a child takes swimming lessons, it reduces the risk of drowning by almost 90%,” said Rowdy Gaines, three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer and member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and Step Into Swim.
