The state Division of Gaming Enforcement granted approval to Esports Entertainment Group to take bets on competitive video games, or esports. The company is getting ready to launch its betting platform within days and will be affiliated with Bally’s Atlantic City casino license, but it will only take bets on esports. Customers on the Esports Entertainment platform will be able to bet on other people playing games including Call of Duty and League of Legends.

Esports is popular with younger people, and those involved say it’s got huge growth potential. The CEO of Esports Entertainment, which has an office in Hoboken, says betting on esports is expected to reach $205 billion in just five years. While Esports Entertainment is the first company the state has approved to take bets, New Jersey regulators have given approval in the past for individual esports events or tournaments.
