State lawmakers Thursday introduced toughest-in-the-nation gun reform legislation in a highly anticipated response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this year that expanded the right to carry firearms outside the home.
This latest bill would expand the vetting process for getting a concealed-carry permit in New Jersey, ban guns from more than two dozen public spaces and beef up the requirements for anyone wanting to carry a gun in public.
“It is our goal to make New Jersey the safest state in the nation to live, work, and raise families, free from fear of becoming a casualty of gun violence,” said Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex).
Sen. Ed Durr (R-Gloucester), a gun rights advocate, decried the bill as “yet another clear example of the Democrats’ open hostility to the Second Amendment and the Constitution as a whole.”
