The recent history of New Jerseyans seeking higher office has not been good. Former senator and Knicks great Bill Bradley stayed in through 20 Democratic primaries and caucuses for the 2000 election; he didn’t win any. Republican Chris Christie left the 2016 race without winning one contest. Sen. Cory Booker failed to win a primary contest before ending his campaign in January 2020.

Now, Gov. Phil Murphy, just weeks into his second term has announced the formation of Stronger, Fairer, Forward — two groups, one that will advocate for issues and another that will raise money for like-minded candidates. Many observers believe they are precursors to a run for president. Murphy’s repeated denials are being met with typical Jersey skepticism.
