Does Gov. Murphy’s new PAC signal national ambitions?

A political action committee could boost Gov. Phil Murphy's national political standing

Is Gov. Phil Murphy preparing for a presidential run? It might be too soon to say, but he’s put together a PAC, a political action committee, that could boost his national political standing. Stronger Fairer Forward PAC, along with the Stronger Fairer Forward policy advocacy group, will support policies and politicians nationwide who align with the governor’s goals of expanding the middle class and defending voting rights. The two groups will be led by New Jersey’s first lady Tammy Murphy, who’ll serve as chair, and by the governor’s senior advisor Dan Bryan, who’ll be executive director. Bryan will step down from his administration role in the coming weeks.

As of now, the governor has not signaled a presidential run is in his future, although it’s common for candidates to put PACs in place before they do. Murphy will take over as chair of the National Governors Association this summer and is currently serving as vice-chair of the Democratic Governors Association and will be chairman next year.
