Gov. Phil Murphy is joining the chorus of local leaders calling for Clark Mayor Sal Bonaccorso to resign. In a video posted online, the mayor admitted to using racial slurs and misogynistic language captured on secret recordings. He apologized, saying he was both embarrassed and ashamed. The recordings captured Bonaccorso referring to Black people with several offensive racial slurs including the N-word. The online apology is the first time the mayor publicly acknowledged using racist slurs.
The story was first reported by NJ Advance Media, following revelations by the outlet that a whistleblower was paid more than $400,000 to keep quiet about the recordings.
