Murphy keeps masks mandatory in classrooms

But the governor won’t copy New York City’s tougher mandates outside of school

“We’re trying to call balls and strikes, make decisions based on facts and science and data — and keep kids in school face to face,” said Gov. Phil Murphy Monday as he announced there would be no changes to school quarantine rules or to his school mask mandate.

COVID-19 cases among New Jersey students and school staff spiked over 6,000 in the week after the Thanksgiving holiday, but Murphy remains unwilling, at least for now, to follow in New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s footsteps and declare tougher mandates outside of school — a mask-or-vax requirement for indoor activities. Philadelphia just enacted a requirement for proof of vaccination for indoor dining.
