Hoboken and Newark are already requiring their public employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Wayne Township is sending letters to all 400 of its municipal workers, advising them to get vaccinated by mid-September or risk losing their jobs.
Many police officers have been reluctant to get the shots despite entire departments being hard-hit by COVID-19 early in the pandemic and as the delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread. There is no official state count for the vaccination rate among New Jersey’s 38,000 police officers, but according to reports from the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association, around 40% of officers are vaccinated.
