More flight delays, cancellations at Newark airport

Staffing shortages have ripple effects. Weather is also an issue

Flight delays and cancellations to and from Newark Liberty International Airport continued during the holiday weekend. The Federal Aviation Administration is working to hire more air traffic controllers, and airlines are trying to add pilots, many of whom retired during the pandemic.

Henry Harteveldt, an airline and travel industry analyst for the Atmosphere Research Group, says that weather has also been a factor in the record number of cancellations already this summer. “I’m worried these delays could become worse as a result of weather, but aggravating the weather problems are staffing problems at airlines and the FAA,” said Harteveldt.

Some 4% more people took to the roads this holiday weekend than in years past, according to AAA.
