High stress at airports as flight cancellations continue

Days of mass cancellations test patience of tired travelers

It’s been a chaotic time for airline passengers. Nearly 1,000 flights were canceled Monday across the U.S. and hundreds more Tuesday, marking a week of mass cancellations. It’s testing the patience of thousands of weary travelers as the air system can’t seem to keep up with post-pandemic pent-up demand and critical staffing shortages.

“Airlines don’t have enough employees at airports, in the reservation centers. Pilots, flight attendants, and almost every role at the airport is understaffed,” said Henry Harteveldt, an airline and travel industry analyst. Another factor is a shortage of air traffic controllers at the Federal Aviation Administration.
