Two Black firefighters in Montclair are suing the township, several officials and a test preparation vendor, alleging the fire department’s promotion process favors white firefighters.
The lawsuit, which was first reported by Montclair Local and Baristanet, contends Black firefighters faced “egregious race discrimination” in the process because, among other items, it was reworked to diminish the value of seniority, which the suit alleges would have favored Black members of the department. The suit is seeking a jury trial and unspecified compensation for damages.
