In Monmouth County on Monday, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th) announced that millions in federal funds will be spent to replenish two areas of the shoreline in Long Branch. Officials say by shoring up the beaches, the state’s tourism industry is supported. But critics say beach replenishment is a temporary fix and they question its worth.
John Weber of the Surfrider Foundation argues that it’s prohibitively expensive and temporary. “We keep replenishing these beaches, and it just doesn’t last. It’s incredibly expensive, and we think there are other things that we could be doing to protect life and property,” he said.
The first phase of the project is expected to wrap up by the beginning of March.
