Some kids in South Jersey got to use the dog days of summer to learn about an important part of our past — attending a first-of-its-kind camp, visiting historical sites and retracing the steps of the Underground Railroad in New Jersey. The camp was at the Peter Mott House Museum, which served as a station along the Underground Railroad and safe house for slaves searching for freedom.

Jacqueline Miller-Bentley, board member for the Lawnside Historical Society, says the location is key to helping campers fully understand this period of history. Lawnside was the first Black town to be incorporated in the Northeast.
